About the Event
For as long as humans have been working together to build a better world, there have been songs to lift our spirits and strengthen our resolve. This concert celebrates music’s power in helping us change the world for the better. At the center of the program is the history of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States and the eventual passage of the 19th Amendment. CHARIS will perform Joan Szymko’s Lifting as We Climb, an extended work that chronicles the history of the women’s suffrage movement through song and narration. CHARIS was part of a nation-wide group of choirs that helped commission this work. Along with the Szymko piece, we will perform songs that have been part of movements to make life better for all people, from freedom songs to pride anthems to songs about war and peace.
