CHARIS Seeks Artistic Director

The position of Artistic Director for CHARIS will be open beginning December 1, 2016. This is a part-time paid position responsible for the overall artistic preparation and performance of the Chorus. CHARIS 8v2-01Get your kicks on Route 66 at CHARIS’ fall concert,Route 66: The Land of Many Colors, November 18 & 19, 2016 at 8 p.m. at the Missouri History Museum(map). Route 66 is widely recognized around the world as an icon of 20th century America, emphasizing personal mobility and pursuit of the American Dream. CHARIS will feature songs about Route 66 and the idea of being on the open road. Route 66 was also a mirror reflection of the social values of the time and its history can tell many of the deeper and sometimes painful stories about American life in the first half of the 20th century–including stories of discrimination for all people of color, women, and non-heteronormative travelers. Nominate Businesses for the Modern Day Green Book

The_Negro_Motorist_Green_BookThe Negro Motorist Green Book was an annual guidebook for African-American roadtrippers, commonly referred to simply as the Green Book. This book helped travelers locate businesses that would be welcoming to non-white customers. A copy of the Green Book is on display in the Route 66 exhibit at the Missouri History Museum until July 16, 2017. In honor of the original Negro Motorist Green Book and our upcoming Route 66 concert, CHARIS has launched a Modern Day Green Book on Facebook. More…
